Judgment Steel: A Hand-Forged Medieval Executioner’s Sword
Bespoke Project: Medieval Executioner Sword
Project Overview
This bespoke piece is a historically inspired recreation of a medieval executioner’s sword—a weapon rich in symbolism and history. Unlike battlefield swords, executioner’s swords were designed not for combat but for ceremonial use in public executions. Characterised by their broad blades, blunt tips, and balanced weight, these swords were tools of solemn purpose, often crafted with ornate and imposing features to reflect the gravity of their role.
Historical Context
Executioner swords were widely used in Europe from the 16th to the 18th century, particularly in Germany and Switzerland. With no pointed tip, these swords were not designed to stab, but to deliver clean, single-stroke decapitations. The fuller—typically running only partway down the blade—reduced weight while maintaining strength. Their unique form and grim role make them powerful symbols of medieval justice and craftsmanship.
Craftsmanship Details
This custom commission was carefully crafted using traditional blacksmithing techniques:
Blade: Hand-forged from high-quality spring steel, the blade features a short fuller running to approximately one-third its length, enhancing both aesthetics and balance. It was precision ground and polished to a satin finish. The tip is square and blunt, staying true to historical executioner designs.
Cross Guard & Pommel: Both elements were forged from mild steel, then blackened using heat and oil oxidation to achieve a rich, aged appearance. Their robust design complements the imposing profile of the blade.
Handle: The core is shaped from hardwood and wrapped in high-grade leather for grip and comfort. It is finished with brass decorative fittings, adding a regal and traditional touch that contrasts beautifully with the darkened steel.
Purpose & Display
While functional, this sword was designed primarily as a ceremonial or display piece, ideal for collectors, reenactors, or museums seeking authentic medieval weaponry. It combines historical accuracy, traditional craftsmanship, and bespoke artistry in a striking and memorable form.
